Baan Tawai is a tourism village full of shops that sell Thai handicrafts and other handmade merchandise, and a lot of these are meant to convey the wisdom of each as well as the local villagers and their way of life. Of these particular crafts, it is wood-carving that that strikes the attention of most.


For about 40 years or so, the skills to create such magnificent works of art has been passed down from generation to generation. Located 20 km (12 miles) south of the city centre on the road towards Doi Inthanon, Ban Tawai is one of the most important craft centres in Thailand. Many of the fantastic items sold in Bangkok, Phuket and Samui are produced right here and by going straight to the source you can get some truly fantastic deals.
